Dimora Lo Scalzo is a small place, made for people who prefer somewhere with a character of its own to a large hotel.
A size that lets us give our guests real attention, and offer something we consider part of the stay: getting to know Accettura, the park and what is genuinely worth seeing nearby.

02 — Accettura
Why stop
in Accettura?
Because before setting out to explore the Gallipoli Cognato and Piccole Dolomiti Lucane Regional Park, the village that belongs to it is worth knowing.
Accettura lies inside a protected area of 27,027 hectares of woods, watercourses and sandstone ridges spread across five municipalities. But some of the most interesting stories begin in its own streets.
In the oldest part of the village runs Vicoletto Pozzo, a passage just 42 centimetres wide. Not far away, the murals tell of one of the deepest bonds between the community and its land. On the front of the town hall, in 1976, the artist Constantin Udroiu painted a large fresco dedicated to the Maggio of Accettura.
Then there are the churches, the old palaces, the glimpses of the historic centre. And, just beyond the last houses, the woods begin.
03 — The Maggio
At Whitsun, here,
a tree is raised.
It all begins in the woods. At Montepiano they choose the Maggio, a great Turkey oak. In the forest of Gallipoli Cognato they choose the Cima, a holly.
Over the days of Whitsun both take the road to Accettura, but in very different ways: the Maggio arrives hauled by oxen; the Cima is carried on shoulders for some fifteen kilometres.
When they reach the village the two trees are prepared, joined and finally raised. The trunk can stand thirty metres tall. Then comes the procession of Saint Julian and, on the Tuesday afternoon, the climb.
People often call it “the marriage of the trees”. Telling it helps you understand it. Being there is another matter.

On foot in the park
The Montepiano wood, the forest of Gallipoli Cognato, valleys, ridges and paths deep in the greenery. You do not have to go far for the landscape to change completely.
The park by bike
Minor roads, gravel tracks and trails cross the park, with e-bike points along the way: another way to move between Accettura and the neighbouring villages.
Castelmezzano and Pietrapertosa
Two villages built among the sandstone spires of the Lucanian Dolomites, both within a single day. In the evening you come back to Accettura.
Matera, in a day
The Sassi are about 82 kilometres away. Close enough to give them a day; far enough that, coming back, the pace changes entirely.
